I recently had a legislator call me up. He was excited about a Trigger Law they had just passed in his state. A Trigger Law is yet the latest way the GOP and the pro-life/pro-family groups can look like they are doing something, while in reality they are doing nothing.
Five states have now passed Trigger laws which declare that, if Roe v. Wade is ever overturned by the Supreme Court, abortion will be illegal in the state. Eight other states have also introduced such legislation. The whole idea of Trigger laws is based upon the false hope that Roe v. Wade is about to be overturned by the Supreme Court.
After the legislator exclaimed the great work they had done by passing the Trigger law and explained what the law does, I quietly asked him, “You know what is wrong with that don’t you?” There was silence on the other end of the phone. He then said with an odd tone in his voice – “no.”
I said, “First, you are teaching people that the fiction of judicial supremacy is legitimate; that they must wait for the Supreme Court to undo their evil; that the state magistrates hands are tied and we must all stand by and continue to watch – like we have for 46 years now – the preborn get slaughtered.”
“Second, you are not doing your duty. The duty of the state magistrates in the face of federal judicial murder is interposition. You are to interpose for the preborn and stop the slaughter. This bill allows the slaughter to continue on the faint hope of SCOTUS undoing their evil.”
Once again there was silence on the other end of the phone. This time quite a bit longer. And he replied, “You’re right. I never even thought of that.” When he said that, I knew he was a good man. We are all learning.
It is imperative that churchmen and Christians instruct the magistrates of their duty and demand interposition. We must also assure them that if they do right in the sight of Christ that we will give them our full support – of our persons, of our possessions, of our prayers. Both publicly and privately.
We must quit the nonsense that the pro-life movement has taught us for the last 46 years, namely, that our only hope to protect the preborn is to go with hat in hand to the tyrant and ask the Supreme Court to undo their evil. You cannot appease a tyrant. Tyranny must be confronted.
Judicial supremacy is a fiction. Interposition is needed and necessary.
The evil done by Trigger laws is huge. They teach a lie – we must wait for the Supreme Court. And they allow the innocent preborn to continue to be slaughtered. They do not stop the evil. Rather, they allow the magistrates to once again not do their duty — which is to interpose and stop the bloodshed.
Understand, the interposition of the lesser magistrates not only restores order to society – but it also abates the just judgment of God. [Ezekiel 22:27-31]
